چکیده

ICARDA and ICRISAT are nonproft international agricultural research centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). They focus on sustainable agricultural development for the dryland poor. They also convene a global, multi-institutional partnership known as the Desertification, Drought, Poverty and Agriculture Consortium (DDPA) to provide research contributions towards the objectives of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Global Mechanism was established by the UNCCD to promote actions leading to the mobilization and channeling of financial resources to developing countries to combat desertification. To learn more about us, visit Acknowledgements The topics of desertification and drought cover a vast range of subject matter, so this paper would have been impossible without the expert insights of scientists from around the world. We began this exercise with an internet discussion group and workshop carried out through IFAD, UNCCD Global Mechanism, and CGIAR support for the formation of an international partnership initiative called the Desertification, Drought, Poverty and Agriculture Consortium (DDPA). This was followed by the circulation of several draft manuscripts and iterations of the review/redrafting process.

Drought hazard and desertification management in the drylands of Southern Africa.

Droughts have been occurring persistently in southern African dryland regions for over a century. The impacts of droughts on people, their domesticated animals, wildlife, rangelands and cropped lands have been shown to be astronomical. If left alone the rangelands often recover after the calamity, however human occupation has led to irreversible damage. Even though some communities have evolved...

Environmental Sustainability of Agriculture Stressed by Changing Extremes of Drought and Excess Moisture: A Conceptual Review

As the climate changes, the effects of agriculture on the environment may change. In the future, an increasing frequency of climate extremes, such as droughts, heat waves, and excess moisture, is expected. Past research on the interaction between environment and resources has focused on climate change effects on various sectors, including agricultural production (especially crop production), bu...

Pro-poor Intervention Strategies in Irrigated Agriculture: Lessons from the Asian Experience

Irrigated agriculture has contributed greatly to food security in Asia— and irrigation projects present new opportunities for reducing poverty. This requires that projects deliberately tilt towards the poor. Moreover, policymakers, implementers and managers need to adopt an integrated approach when using irrigation as a pro-poor intervention strategy. With the right institutional and technical ...

Saltgrass, a potential future landscaping plant and a suitable species for desert regions: A review

Continuous desertification of arable lands mandates use of low quality/ saline water for irrigation, especially in regions experiencing water shortage. Using low quality/ saline water for irrigation imposes more stress on plants that are already under stress in these regions. Thus, a logical solution will be to find a salt/ drought-tolerant plant species that will survive/sustain under such str...
